the worst way to study medicine

i once met an old timer specialist who's teaching part time because he loves doing so.
he was telling me bout the new breed of med students he's teaching.

ol' timer : bunch of snobs if you ask me.

me        : nah, that aint so. they're juz trying to hide their fear by being aloof.

ol' timer : huh really? they think that knowing everything will make them smarter.

me        : isnt that true?

ol' timer : for the 1st year maybe.

me         : and the next four years?

ol' timer : they'd be lucky if they dont go under.

me        : gulp, why so?

ol' timer : because fact is not knowledge. knowing everything doesnt make you a tad wiser.

me        : so memorizing all those facts won't help?

ol' timer : it's just the first step kid. i think most of them don't really care bout thinking.

me        : what do you mean?

ol' timer : they dont think. everytime they face a problem, they turn to memory for solution.

me        : how can that be wrong? everyone does that.

ol' timer : look, real life is not a textbook. it's not a matching game. what you know is just a guideline.

me        : so, what's the right way?

ol' timer : the first step? accept the fact that memorizing is NOT thinking.

and he continued telling me a bunch of stuff about what thinking is all about. it's kinda lengthy so im not gonna touch it in here.
